Join us for an informative lecture about the establishment of the Mormon Summer Quarters in Fort Calhoun. Lecture presented by Dr. Richard Bennett, Director of the Mormon Trail Center in Florence, and Professor Emeritus at Brigham Young University.
This early Mormon settlement was an agricultural operation, started on the remains of Fort Atkinson. It was created to provide food and supplies to the Mormon pioneers on their way to Salt Lake. Dr. Bennett will present the story of why and how Summer Quarters was established, the controversial leadership of John D. Lee, a close confidant of Brigham Young, and the dissention and eventual decay of Summer Quarters.
